4 Things to Buy When You Move Into an Assisted Living Community

Moving into an assisted living facility is a big transition and one that you can experience many benefits from. You no longer have to do the cleaning, mow your lawn, or worry about what’s for dinner! And while all of these conveniences may make life a lot easier, there are some things to bring with you that can make assisted living even more enjoyable.

Here are some items you won’t want to forget to pack in your bag.

Bedding

Feeling cozy in your environment is all about having the right bedding. Although some assisted living facilities may offer to use their bedding, there’s nothing that compares to comfortable bedding that you bring yourself. From your duvet to your pillows— invest in soft yet durable materials that will ensure a good night’s sleep.  After all, these are your retirement years, you deserve to sleep like a baby!

Personal Care

You want to make sure that you have all your favorite personal care items from home.  From your toothpaste to your favorite face mask, make sure that you bring it with you. Besides loving these products, they can also provide a sense of familiarity. Making the switch to suddenly using a generic brand or something you’ve never used before can be jolting. When you have things you’re used to using at home, it will make the transition that much easier.

Decorations

Just because you live in an assisted living facility doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use their decorations. Bring your own decorations from home!  From paintings to photographs, the more you can create a familiar environment that feels like home, the more you’ll feel like your space is yours. The idea is to bring items that you don’t just enjoy looking at, but also bring sentimental value.  It’s all about creating a personal touch that will serve as a reminder of all of your cherished memories.

A Computer

While your family members will undoubtedly come to visit you, in between visits, it’s important that you stay up to date with what’s going on in their lives. The best place to do that is on social media platforms like Facebook.

Make sure that you bring a computer so that you can browse your feed and enjoy all of the latest updates from the people you love most.

Although your cell phone is practical too, there’s nothing like a full computer screen to see up close. Besides being able to keep in touch with your loved ones, you can also stream movies and play your favorite online games.

Remember, not every assisted living facility is the same. Some may provide certain things that others don’t, and vice versa. Always consult with the on-site manager to ensure that you’re familiar with any guidelines or restrictions about what you can and can’t bring.
